Hundred Percent

February 28th, 2010 12:12 am by Jaspi

A boy and a girl were playing together. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl had some sweets with her. The boy told the girl that he will give her all his marbles in exchange for her sweets. The girl agreed. The boy kept the biggest and the most beautiful marble aside and gave the rest to the girl. The girl gave him all her sweets as she had promised.

That night, the girl slept peacefully. But the boy couldn’t sleep as he kept wondering if the girl had hidden some sweets from him the way he had hidden his best marble.

Moral of the story: If you don’t give your hundred percent in a relationship, you’ll always keep doubting if the other person has given his/her hundred percent?

This is applicable for any relationship like love, friendship, employer-employee relationship etc., Give your hundred percent to everything you do and sleep peacefully !!

He thawnthu tawite hian, ka nun kawng min sawi danglam sak vek nia….!

    another version:

A boy and a girl were playing together. The boy had a collection of marbles. The girl had some sweets with her. The boy told the girl that he will give her all his marbles in exchange for her sweets. The girl agreed. THE BOY GAVE HER ALL THE GOOD MARBLES, BUT THE GIRL ONLY GAVE HER HALF OF THE CANDIES. Even though the girl claimed that she had given him all of the sweets, the boy knew she was lying because he knew how much sweets she used to own.

That night, THE GIRL slept peacefully because she had all of the good marbles now. But the boy couldn’t sleep as he knew that he had been tricked.

Moral of the story: Don’t be too trusting in a collective goods problem ;).

    Interesting argument, but inherently flawed:

Here we ‘assume’ that the girl has given everything. And as such, the moral is derived from the fact that the boy is restless and constantly irked by the thought of whether the girl had also given a little less that what she really had. This would appear to be quite detached from reality – as far as I am concerned, I believe that in reality human beings tend to be inherently ignorant of things we don’t know for sure and are usually unperturbed by it, that is, if the matter does not involve anything that will cause us financial harm or take away too much of our time (as would most likely be in the case of an exchange of marbles and sweets!).

Even in the metaphorical sense to which this parable is aimed, I’ve always believed that relationships are about getting to know each other over a period of time (or forever if commitment is implied!)… as such, I feel that if you give everything that you have (like most people say they do!) in the beginning, you find that in time you have nothing more to give (because you’ve already given everything!), the ‘fuzzy feeling’ starts to fade away and ultimately hearts are broken or otherwise the relationship goes on frail and void of any emotion. So it’s wise to save some of those marbles for later… ’cause then you’ll have surprises for later upon which you can continue building the relationship!
