Gujarat, Mizoram: United in prohibition

July 20th, 2009 2:20 pm by Sandman

…but different in implementation. An article by Adam Halliday.

The two frontier states on the west and east, Gujarat and Mizoram, are different from each other in many respects. But there is something they share in common-Prohibition law. These are the only two ‘dry’ states in the country.

The grounds of implementation of the law are, however, different. In Gujarat, prohibition law is based on Gandhian ideology, while in Mizoram, it is the Church that leads the way.

Admin note: Adam Halliday got his post-graduate diploma in Journo from Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, in early May this year, and joined Express formally on 5th May 2009. He will be with the Express’ Ahmedabad Bureau for at least a year.

He doesn’t have any specific beats right now, but have been working with the labour, child and women development departments there, some environmental issues, a little bit of cultural stuff – mainly concerning libraries and books – and higher education which means IIM-A, NID and the other institutes in Gujarat. He is also a reporter-cum-photographer, which means he goes to places the other photographers don’t feel like going :D

On behalf of misual.com, we wish our budding new journalist a prosperous career ahead. And may he rise to the occasion when Mizoram’s name needs to be defended.
