To the students in Timothy Wolfe’s environmental crimes class at Mount St. Mary’s University, the Bhopal and Exxon Valdez disasters are part of the history books.
“It’s problematic that it’s not in our collective memories,” Wolfe said to the class.
Wolfe is professor of criminology and sociology and chairman of the school’s sociology department. Only one student had heard of the 1984 Bhopal disaster. “I don’t fault you at all,” he said. “You absorb what is there.”

Heading into Aizawl after 12 hours on the road and into the darkness still doesn’t dampen the spirits on our bus. I’ve never met a group of people with so much inner strength, nothing gets them down. They’re still telling jokes and singing. My nerves are completely shot and I’m ready to do anything to get off this bus. I’m on antibiotics and extremely drowsy. It’s only 5PM but with no life on the streets and no lights it feels like the middle of the night. Then, as if the whole approach to the city was one big charade, a prank played on first- time visitors, we turn a corner and discover that Aizawl is actually a magnificent mountain city with hundreds of thousands of yellow and white lights dotted like stars on a dozen slopes.

“Cobra! Cobra!” A woman’s screams pierce the hot night in a tiny village in Myanmar, formerly Burma. An American snake expert–the first scientist ever to survey all reptiles in this isolated region happens to be in the village in his quest for new cobra species
He races toward the cries, tailed by a throng of curious villagers. Inside a hut, the woman’s family stands rooted in fear. Coiled near the back wall, a 3-foot-long cobra arches with a hiss, poised to strike.
More than 68,000 people hunt for Maryland deer, an activity that helps control the deer population while contributing more than $150 million annually to the state’s economy, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.
The rifle season is the most popular deer hunting season, accounting for nearly half of the deer taken each year. DNR Deer Project Leader Brian Eyler predicted hunters will kill 40,000 to 45,000 deer over the next two weeks.
Last year, Maryland hunters killed 52,796 deer during the firearm season. That included 970 sika deer, a Japanese species found on the lower Eastern Shore that is smaller than the native white-tailed deer.
