Mizoram to become the Kuwait of Northeast

March 17th, 2007 12:54 am by Mnowluck

AIZAWL: India’s mountainous Mizoram state could soon earn the sobriquet of Kuwait of the Northeast with the region sitting on huge unexplored hydrocarbon reserves.

“We hope crude oil would transform Mizoram into Kuwait in the very near future with the state located in an area believed to be a black gold mine,” said H. Lallenmawia, head of Mizoram’s geology and mining department.

    Very Interesting…
Khawngaih takin oil chu zawng chhuak hram2 teh u, it cud be a big break for all of us.
    But pls do these:
    - Dont put corrupt ppl on it
    - Make proper arrangement for marketing

Why cant we make a name for ourselves instead of trying to be “Switzerland of the East”? “Kuwait of the NE?” Can we just be “MIZORAM” the land where WE Mizo ppl live?

If there is oil, it does not mean instant blessing. If you look at Iraq, Iran, Sierra Leonne, Nigeria, Brazil (can’t think of othe places right this minute but there’s more), whenever a valuable natural resource is discovered, the lands native people get exploited, in many cases pretty severely. We must be very careful.
USA has approx 25% of the worlds oil in their own land, yet they chose to use oil from overseas partially because of the environmental impacts of digging for oil.
Exxon and the Myanmarese governtment relocated entire tribal villages to make room for oil wells.
There are alot of things to ponder.

triflin_tribal, yuo can add Nigeria and Sudan to the list.
Look at Assam, a state with so much oil reserves. But no major refinery in the state. You cannot blame insuegency since even when Assam was perfectly peaceful, all the crude oil from Assam had been sent to Bihar.

OK, Kuwait of the East (coin framed by Economic Times not Mnowluck). Do you know that people wear long robes in that country, worship Allah, observe Ramzan strictly (no breakfast or lunch (no sex either) from around 5.30 a.m. till 6.45 p.m). for a whole month, requirement to pray five times facing Meccah, no real freedom for women (although they can vote), they are expected to wear hijab, a black (not red, pink, green or blue) robe with head coverings, no people’s power to change the government (Emir is fixed leader), no alcohol at least publicly (sounds familiar ?), no nightclub, no disco, no karaoke club, no kissing in public…

Still want to be Kuwait of the East ?

natural resources found under the surface of the earth automatically comes under the central list under the indian law.we have three lists, state list (that which belongs to the state in which that resource is found),central list (that which belongs to the central govt of india) and concurrent list (that which is shared by both the state and central govt ).. so if oil is discovered…i hope our politicians who`ll be in power at the time of signing the papers (or whatever) will be insightful enough to consult people who are throughly well-versed in dealing with such matters..so that our state and mizos can gain as much as possible from it. or we`ll end up like the khasis and their uranium discovery and all we`ll get is chances of earning a few bucks as labourers and maybe a couple of chowkidars at the site offices and of course not to forget a couple of crores by the concerned ministers and officers who`ll help work the signing away of the precious deed to some tatas or birlas or ambanis of the country.we would have to sign deeds with these big companies anyway i know, because we dont have the aptitude and technical know-how to extract oil…but hey it can be done with professional help so that the concerned state can benefit as much as possible…ka va tho fuh e..ka sawi teuh chu

    kuwait of the east

im really confuse whether to take it as a good sign or bad sign………

    1) kuwait is practically dominate by US administration, even their so called ministers are under 24×7 watch of CIA and even there are instances of people taken or threaten by CIA ….so i dont want mizoram to become a “banana republic” just as what happened in kuwait and other west asian countries.

2)i dont have any faith in politicians , whether national or state level.
please recall that our central ministers and his colleague had sold a profit making ONGC oil field to Reliance and other private companies at a price which is much below the market value……….
